Barungwarra Bushland Reserve, Bald Hills, Brisbane
Bush Turkeys invade Barungwarra
Over recent years we have noticed the presence of a bush turkey at the reserve.
Just recently, the bush turkey population has exploded and last week I counted 7
turkeys roaming around the area, Seems like our original bush turkey has produced
some offspring.
Unfortunately, this has caused problems because the turkeys are scratching out
some of the shrubs which we had planted at previous sessions. On Saturday 18th
June, we placed a thick coating of mulch over the worst affected bed - the St Paul’s
bed - which, hopefully, will protect the remaining shrubs. Just as we were leaving,
we noticed a turkey (top right photo) had already started work on our newly placed
mulch.

New Barungwarra Boat Ramp opens
For several weeks now the contractors have been working on
the new boat ramp and on arrival for our June gardening
session we noticed that the safety fence had been removed
and the ramp is now open for business
The ramp has a deeply lined surface to reduce slip on the
surface and a stone strip down both sides which not only
enhances the appearance but also provides a tactile safety
aspect for drivers who stray near the edge of the ramp.
There is a 30cm drop on one side.
Whilst taking photos of the new ramp. Boatie Joe arrived with
his boat and kindly gave me the OK to take some photos of his
boat.
Council installs new water tap
Bald Hills Bushies have been carting water in home
made watering transporters from the tap near the shed
to the new beds near the car park. It was especially
necessary during the recent long hot summer as some
of our plantings appeared to be severely stresses by the
hot dry conditions. Bushies were visiting the park several
times a week to cart water to the bed to keep the soil moist.
Life will be a lot easier in the future now that Council has
installed a new tap near the 20 year Rock memorial in the
railway garden bed. Check out the new Interactive map
for location details .
St Paul’s School to raise seedlings
We have now purchased 160 Seedlings from the Pine Rivers
Community Nursery and these will be given to the St Paul’s
School Students who will be caring for them until they are
ready for transplanting in to the reserve . Whilst most of the
plants will be ready for planting out later this year, others will
need up to 18 months before they are ready.
St Paul’s have purchased a new greenhouse which will be used
to house the seedlings.
